Weekend Summary


Friday, November 18, the Helena Bighorns travelled to Missoula to face number two ranked Missoula Maulers. The first period was scoreless despite almost thirty combined shots on net. Helena’s Michael Sullivan came out in the second period on fire, scoring just fourteen seconds in. Another goal wasn’t to be had until more than halfway into the third period. This time it was Missoula’s Cory Shafer, tying up the score 1-1 and forcing the game into overtime. The final goal of the evening came from Missoula’s George Pagonis a little over two minutes into overtime, leaving the final score, 2-1.

 Saturday, November 19 the Bighorns returned to home ice, looking to return the favor and hand the Maulers a loss. The only goal for the first period came from Missoula’s CJ Morrison nine minutes into the period. Missoula scored again three minutes into the second period, making the score 2-0. Helena finally lit the lamp with a goal by Brian Skillicorn almost ten minutes into the period. Just four minutes later, Helena’s Michael Sullivan made a goal, tying the score 2-2. Missoula still have one more goal left in them for the period, with a goal by Dillon Bogart leaving the score 3-2 going into the second intermission. Helena’s Damon Hanson gave Bighorns fans a reason to hope, scoring the team’s third goal of the evening just one minute into the third period. Despite several Bighorns penalties, the team was able to kill all of Missoula’s power play opportunities. Everyone was expecting another overtime game when Missoula’s George Pagonis scored the game winning goal with less than fifty seconds left in the game. The Bighorns now have a 13-2-1 record, the same record as the Maulers, but Missoula has taken the lead in the AWHL, with one more point than the Bighorns.

 The Bighorns will be hosting the Bozeman Icedogs on Friday, November 25, 2011. After shopping all day on Black Friday, fans are invited come out and relax at “Blue Friday” with the Bighorns.
