Helena hangs on, beats Yellowstone 2-0

Helena beat Yellowstone, 2-0, in a contest where the winning goal was scored in the first period but the game remained close throughout.

Riley Keays provided Helena with the game-winning tally when he scored 4:55 into the first period. Johnny Bonta picked up the assist.

Keays had a great game for Helena, netting two goals.

Grant Martens spearheaded the defensive effort for Helena, as he did not allow a puck past him and made 48 saves for the shutout. Martens certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.94 entering the contest.

Helena stifled Yellowstone\’s power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. Helena forced Yellowstone goalie Derrick LaCombe to work between the pipes, taking 37 shots.

Other players who recorded assists for Helena were Ryan Daugherty and Cody Vanthournout, who contributed one each.

Yellowstone could not produce up to its normal offensive output. Yellowstone averages 3.1 goals per game. Helena was unable to stop Yellowstone from sending pucks towards the net, and Yellowstone eventually piled up 48 shots on goal. Yellowstone\’s power play was punchless, and failed to score a single goal despite having nine power play opportunities.

Helena incurred 16 minutes in penalty time with eight minors. LaCombe recorded 35 saves for Yellowstone. Yellowstone incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
