The Helena Ice Arena buzzed with excitement as the Bighorns and Americans prepared for their first meeting in Helena of the season. Fans turned out in record numbers to celebrate Veterans Day with the Bighorns. The Boy Scout Pack #212 Color Guard of Helena was on hand to present the colors for the evening. Commander Sergeant Major William D. Cooper, the Senior Enlisted Leader of the Montana National Guard, was on hand for the ceremonial puck drop. He generously provided the captains of the teams with commemorative coins.

Helena put up seventeen shots-on-goal during the first period, converting two of those into goals. Logan Hawgood earned his first goal of the season with a Bighorns goal five and a half minutes in. Balasz Goz also earned his first goal of the season to give Helena a 2-0 lead fourteen minutes into the period.

Ryan Parkhouse opened the second period with an unassisted goal five minutes into the period. An Americans penalty gave the Bighorns a power play opportunity and Bryan Fiol took advantage, scoring the Bighorns fourth goal of the evening. Just seventy seconds later, Damon Hanson scored on another power play to give the bighorns a 5-0 lead. Great Falls finally got on the board with a power play goal of their own by Adam Pecht. Helena’s Kevin Kassulat scored late in the period to give the Bighorns a 6-1 lead going into the second intermission.

The Great Falls Americans outscored the Bighorns 3-1 in the third period but it wasn’t enough to make a comeback. Helena’s lone goal came from Bryan Fiol more than half way through the period. Bighorns penalties gave the Americans the opportunity to convert two power play opportunities. The end of the period came without another goal, leaving the final score 7-4 and the Bighorns with a record of 12-1.

The Bighorns travel to Great Falls on Saturday, November 12 to take on the Americans in the second of the weekend’s home-&-home series. The Bighorns will be home again on Saturday, November 19 where they will be hosting the Missoula Maulers. The Bighorns will be working with Helena Food Share to collect food at Saturday’s game.
