For many junior hockey players, moving up to the next level or getting a college scholarship is their ultimate goal. The young men who play for the Helena Bighorns are no different. Helena’s goalie Jett Salinas had the unique opportunity to play in the NAHL at the beginning of the month. The 17-year-old from Las Angeles, CA spent two weeks practicing with the Wenatchee Wild in Wenatchee, WA where he was able to improve his play as a goalie and make connections that will help him advance his career.

Although he didn’t end up playing in any games while with the Wild, Salinas was still able to experience hockey in the NAHL. He described NAHL hockey as being faster-paced and felt that the players brought a higher level of competition to the game. The team and coaching staff were all very welcoming to Salinas. Salinas says that he immediately felt at home with the team and that the coaching staff taught him how to improve his positioning and gave him plenty of positive feedback.

When asked why he felt he was invited to play with the Wild, Salinas shared one of his favorite quotes, “Will over Skill.” Salinas’s ranking as #1 goalie in the AWHL proves that he has the skill. But he feels that it is his will to work hard to improve his playing that will enable him to move up to the next level  in the future. Salinas hopes to play full time in the NAHL next season and saw his time with the Wild as a positive “try out” experience for next season.

To catch Salinas and the rest of the Bighorns team, make plans to attend “Sylvan Learning Night with the Bighorns” on Friday, January 27th. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit us online at www.HelenaBighorns.com or call (406) 457-2817.
