Billings holds on for 3-2 win against Helena

The Billings Bulls survived a determined comeback attempt by the Helena Bighorns on the way to a 3-2 win.

A goal by Cameron Birklid put Billings up 3-1 in the third period, but Helena pulled to within one on Cody Vanthournout\’s tally 12:31 into the third period.

Birklid had one goal and two assists to lead the Bulls. Birklid scored on the power play 7:41 into the third period to make the score 3-1 Billings. Billings had gained a power play chance when Brandt Miller was whistled for boarding. Ralfs Karelis provided the assist.

The Bulls kept the Bighorns\’ goalie busy throughout the game, and Adam Ranck made 34 saves on 37 shots.

Steven Thompson also scored for Billings. More assists for Billings came via Nick Rizzo, Joe Mata, and Tristan Henrichs, who contributed one each.

Helena did not reach the goal total it has come to expect this season. The Bighorns average 4.4 goals per game.

Helena was helped by Matt Mohar, who racked up one goal. Mohar scored 7:32 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Billings. Miller assisted on the tally. Other players who recorded assists for Helena were Brandon Mills, Kendall Bolen-Porter, and Johnny Bonta, who each chipped in one.

Billings\’ Cole Semchak stopped 25 shots out of the 27 that he faced. The Bulls incurred four minutes in penalty time with two minors. The Bighorns totaled 23 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 0-for-2 on the power play.
