Coming off two losses last weekend, the Helena Bighorns prepared all week to play strong offensive hockey this weekend against the Gillette Wild. The first period saw a lot of back-and-forth as the two teams battled to score the first goal. Helena finally prevailed when Drew Ingram scored twelve-and-a-half minutes into the period. The only goal of the period, the Bighorns entered the first intermission leading 1-0.

The second period started out much the same as the first, the first goal not coming until more than halfway through. Helena’s Alex DeWitz gave the Bighorn’s a 2-0 lead while the team was shorthanded. With less than forty seconds left in the period, Cody Blom takes advantage of a power play opportunity to give the Bighorns a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Wild came out in the third period on an aggressive offensive push. Just eight-five seconds in, Gillette’s Tyler Cavan got the Wild on the board. A few minutes later, Taylor Motsinger scored for the Wild and closed to gap to just one point. The rest of the period was a nail-bitter as everyone waited to see if the Bighorns would be able to keep the Wild from scoring again and tying up the score. With just ninety seconds left in the game, Bighorns fans breathed a sigh of relief when a goal by Helena’s Trevor Tracy gave the team a 4-2 lead. The Wild were unable to score again and the Bighorns won the game 4-2.

The Bighorns will face the Gillette Wild again tomorrow in the second of a two-game matchup between the two teams.
