The Missoula Maulers rolled into town looking for blood. After a shoot-out overtime loss to the Bighorns three weeks ago at their home opener, the Maulers hoped that tonight would be their night to give the Bighorns their first loss of the season. The Bighorns refused to let that happen.
Tension filled the arena as the two teams went back-and-forth, taking shots but not scoring. With a power-play opportunity, the Bighorns finally drew first blood. Scoring on Maulers’ goalie McKinlee Baum with less than seven minutes left in the first period, Bighorns’ defensemen Brandon Rumble scored his first goal of the season.
Another goal wasn’t scored until almost four minutes into the second period. With a power-play opportunity of their own, the Maulers got on the board with a goal by Tyler Marye. A few minutes later, a five-on-three advantage allowed Mike Sullivan to score the Bighorns’ second goal of the evening. Not finished for the night, Mike Sullivan scored his second goal of the night less than five minutes later, giving the Bighorns a comfortable 3-1 lead. Beau Ricketts came up with the Bighorns’ final goal of the night just two minutes after Sullivan’s goal.
Going into the third period, the Bighorns led the Maulers 4-1. Despite several opportunities for both teams, the Bighorns were unable to sneak another shot past Baum. Missoula’s Zach Paisley took advantage of the Bighorns’ only third period penalty to score another power-play goal. Despite more than ten minutes left in the third period, neither team was able to score again. As the final seconds ticked down on the clock, everyone knew the inevitable, the Bighorns had beat the Maulers 4-2.
