Bighorns Play Squirts/Bantams

There was a lot of commotion Wednesday evening at the Helena Ice Arena.  Half game but all fun, the defending national champion Helena Bighorns scrimmaged a mixture of youth hockey Helena Bighorns bantam and squirts (in this article called “Littlehorns”).

In a fun game complete with three periods of a twenty minute running clock, a referee, and the Bighorns wearing their home, blue barber-striped jerseys and the Littlehorns wearing their white home jerseys, the event was full of laughs and seemed like the Harlem Globetrotters on ice.  Numerous times the Bighorns could be seen tossing a glove to stop a breakaway, bear hugging their smaller opponents along the boards, or even goalie Trey Flesch skating coast-to-coast in hopes to score a goal (the shot was blocked, fittingly).

The contest was high scoring and extremely close as players were able to showcase their talents.  Bighorns and Littlehorns swapped score-for-score and regulation finished tied, forcing a shootout.  The Littlehorns ended up beating their larger couterparts 14-13 for the evening.

Following the game Bighorns captain Ryan Parkhouse explained “Those kids are real shifty and are very skilled. They gave us a run for our money tonight. The future of Helena hockey looks very bright.”

The Bighorns play in Great Falls Friday and at home Saturday hosting the Billings Bulls.

Against Billings the Bighorns will be celebrating their Christmas game.  From 6:30-8:30 Santa Claus will be on hand at the Helena Ice Arena where fans can sit down and take pictures.  This game also features the annual Teddy Bear Toss.  Fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear and following the first Bighorns goal of the evening toss them onto the ice.  The teddy bears are collected and donated to Toys for Tots and distributed locally by the Marines.  Also scheduled for the evening is the grand opening of the Bighorns Store, an ugly sweater contest, and player autographs following the game.

Fans are encouraged to purchase remaining tickets at the Helena Ice Arena ticket box office, online at, or by calling the Bighorns Ticket Hotline at 457-2817.
