Bighorns captain Ben Henne was the first to score for the night with a power play goal at the 6:26 mark. The Maulers answered back with a goal of their own in the last minute of the first period to pull even going into the first intermission.
The second period consisted of Helena taking the lead and Missoula tying the game back up. Christian Axelsson scored with an unassisted goal with 3:11 gone in the second. Missoula quickly answered back in less than a minute to even the score at 2 apiece, showing that their offense was on par with the explosive Bighorns offense. Kyle Baker broke the tie on another powerplay goal, assisted by Logan Hawgood and Ben Henne halfway through the period. Another Missoula goal at 15:11 ended the second with a tied score of 3-3.
A third period powerplay goal from Dylan Webster lifted the Bighorns to a 4-3 lead at the 10:40 mark. The defense and goalie Jett Salinas buckled down for the last ten minutes of the period as Missoula failed to score an equalizing goal, sealing the game for Helena.
The Bighorns and Maulers hit the ice once again in a rematch of last night’s game in Missoula tonight. They then return home on Saturday to conclude the weekend with the Bighorns playing host to the Bozeman Icedogs on Toys for Tots night at the Helena Ice Arena.
