The Bighorns looked to close 2011 with a win over the Missoula Maulers and they didn’t disappoint. An early penalty by Missoula gave Helena's Alex DeWitz the opportunity to score an unassisted power play goal. Another goal by Helena’s Wyatt Winfield just twenty-four seconds later gave the Bighorns a quick 2-0 lead.  Missoula finally got on the board with a goal by Jim Morris a little over twelve minutes into the period. Neither team was able to score again and the period ended 2-1.

The second period started with the Maulers looking to even the score. Tension continued to build as time passed and neither team was able to come up with a goal. The Bighorns finally had a chance when another Maulers' penalty allowed Helena’s Beau Ricketts to score a power play goal and widen the lead to two. Ten minutes later the period ended and the Bighorns lead 3-1.

Both teams were impatient to begin the final 20 minutes of play and the fans eagerly awaited the outcome. The first goal didn’t come until almost eight minutes in when Helena’s Drew Ingram got one in the back of the net. Down 4-1, the Maulers made a last-ditch effort to score by pulling their goalie in order to have an extra man on the ice. Their strategy proved ineffective when Helena’s Beau Ricketts got a break-away opportunity and easily scored on the empty net with just 47 seconds left in the game. The final seconds of the game quickly counted down to leave the Bighorns the victors with a 5-1 win.
