Bighorns to Host Wyatt Winfield Night on Saturday, November 16th
The Helena Bighorns have announced today that their upcoming home game on Saturday, November 16th will be held in honor of Wyatt Winfield. Winfield, a local player, who spent four seasons with the Bighorns tragically passed away in an automobile accident on March 15th, 2013. November 16th would mark Wyatt’s 20th birthday, which will be celebrated by his family and friends at the event.
Wyatt’s mother, Brigitte, will be in attendance and will drop the ceremonial first puck. “As Wyatt’s parents, we are preparing ourselves for a bittersweet evening,” said Brigitte. “It’s really impossible to express how much we miss him, but to be at the rink on Saturday night among his family, friends and teammates is exactly where Wyatt would expect us to be on his birthday,” she added.
Head Coach Scott Cunningham, who coached Winfield during his time with the Bighorns, has fond memories of Wyatt:
“Hockey players are usually known as humble guys. They rarely deviate from the expected script in interviews, preferring to use the same tired clichés every time they speak to the press. “I give 100% every game”, “It’s about the team,” “Take it one game at a time.” When they offer something outside the norm, it is often cause for celebration.” said Cunningham.
“Yes, Wyatt was a hockey player, humble, honest, hard-working and gave 100% each game. Knowing what I know now, Wyatt was much more than a hockey player. Wyatt was a friend to many, a son to Jay and Brigitte, a grandson and an idol and mentor to kids that wanted to be just like him.” He added.
Tonight we honor Wyatt Winfield with the raising of his #15 banner, to never forget and always remember the times we shared with Wyatt.
