Kevin Clark scored the go-ahead goal less than six minutes into the third period as the Helena Bighorns beat the Yellowatone Quake 5-2 on Friday night at the Helena Ice Arena.
The win keeps the Bighorns (6-0, 12 points) undefeated and in sole possession of first place in the America West Division heading into tonight\’s game against Missoula. Missoula (4-1, 8 points) beat Butte 2-1 on Friday.
Clark took a pass from Rudy Pino and beat Yellowstone goalie Alex Larson to snap a 2-all tie.
Adam Johnson added a pair of empty-net goals in the final two minutes to finish the scoring. Johnson leads all Bighorns with seven goals through the first six games.
Yellowstone (4-2) took a 1-0 lead on a powerplay in the first period when Chris Rinaldi beat Helena netminder Ryan Sutliffe at the 8:33 mark. The Quake managed just 16 shots on the night.
Helena tied the game midway through the second on Ty Schindler\’s goal and took a 2-1 lead with seven minutes remaining in the period when Rudy Pino scored.
Undaunted, Yellowstone answered less than a minute later when Rinaldi (6G, 4 A) scored his second goal of the game to tie the contest.
Helena, which has outshot every opponent this season, had a 39-16 advantage on this night.
Yellowstone went 1 for 6 on the powerplay and Helena 0 for 6. Helena is just 1 for 33 on the powerplay in the first six games of the season.
