The Bighorns started their 2012 campaign at home with a bang, defeating the Yellowstone Quake 10-0 Friday night at the Helena Ice Arena. The first goal of the evening came when Christian Axelsson scored just over three minutes into the game. The Bighorns took advantage of the many powerplay opportunities given to them by Yellowstone, scoring their next two goals with a man advantage. The Bighorns ended the night going 3 for 6 on powerplay opportunities.
After a five-goal first period, the scoring slowed a bit with Helena slowly adding to their lead, wearing on the Quake’s defense. The second period saw the Bighorns lighting up the lamp two more times, while they managed three more goals in the third period.
Dylan Webster had an impressive five assists, having a part in half of the Bighorns' goals on Friday. Parker Olsen led the team for the night scoring two goals. Goalie Alek Lazarski completed the shutout having saved all 25 shots-on-goal he faced.
The series shifted to Cody on Saturday night to conclude the weekend. Yellowstone came out firing, in the attempt to avenge the shutout on the road Friday the previous night. There Quake outshot the Bighorns 3-to-1 in the first period and were up 2-0 after twenty minutes of play.
Helena fell behind even more as the Quake added another goal 16 minutes into the second period. However, the tempo of the game changed when a power play goal by Jacob Wolter in the final moments of the period gave the Bighorns new life.
The Quake tide suddenly changed in the third. Helena took over with their potent offensive attack, tying the game in the space of six minutes, including another Wolter goal assisted by Logan Hawgood and Brandon Rumble, just before the tenth minute. A Theo Campe goal at the 11:24 mark gave the Bighorns the lead for the first time of the evening. Jacob Wolter completed the hat-trick, adding some cushion for the Bighorns as they completed the comeback effort to win the game 5-3.
