Tyler Miller recorded his first hat trick and newcomers Gehrett Sargis and Gene Constantine also scored as the Helena Bighorns routed the Bozeman Icedogs 11-1 in a NorPac game on Friday night at the Helena Ice Arena.
Adam Johnson also scored twice for Helena (39-5, 78 points), which has clinched the top seed in the Cascade Cup playoffs. Helena will likely face Billings in the first round of the playoffs.
Billings (19-25, 38 points) needs just one win or one more Bozeman loss to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot from the America West Division. Billings visits Helena tonight at 7:35.
Helena extended its winning streak against Bozeman (16-29, 32 points) to 13 games, including a sweep in the first-round of last season’s playoffs.
The 11 goals mark the fifth time this season the Bighorns have scored in double digits.
Sargis scored his first goal as a Bighorn on an assist from Zack Maxwell just 1:59 into the game. It was the first of six goals Helena would tally before the first intermission. Constantine, who also joined the team last week, scored twice and also had an assist.
Miller scored his first two goals, just 1:07 apart late in the period to increase the lead to 6-0, on Bozeman netminder Taylor D’Agostino, who allowed five goals on 13 shots before giving way to Andrew Alberda.
The Bighorns had 17 different players record points, including Rudy Pino, who had one assist. Johnson extended his scoring streak to 13 games and took over the team scoring lead from Pino with 80 points.
Nic Wackerly stopped 20 of 21 shots in net for Helena.
