Army National Guard Night began with a honor guard presenting the American and state flags for the National Anthem. Brigadier General Walsh was also present to participate in the ceremonial puck drop. When the two teams finally took to the ice, it was a back-and-forth battle between the Wild and the Bighorns. Helena got on the board first with a goal from Damon Hanson thirteen minutes in. Not another goal was to be had and the first period ended 1-0.
Gillette scored less than two minutes into the second period to tie the game 1-1. Less than a minute later, Gillette scored again to take the lead. Gillette went on to score two more goals in the period, including a short-handed goal with less than fifty seconds left. The second intermission saw the Wild leading 4-1.
The Bighorns began the third period looking to make a comeback, replacing goalie Jett Salinas with Trey Flesch. Drew Ingram cut Gillette’s lead to two with a goal four-and-a-half minutes into the period. Twelve minutes later Helena’s Trevor Tracy brought hope back to the Helena Ice area with a goal to put the Bighorns within one goal of a tie. The last few minutes of the game was a nail-bitter as the Bighorns attempted to tie the game, even pulling their goalie to gain a man advantage. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and the Wild won, 4-3. Tonight’s loss dropped the Bighorns back to second place in the AWHL standings.
The Bighorns will be on the road next week but will be back at home on February 17th and 18th for a two game homestand. The Bighorns will be hosting the Billings Bulls on Friday, February 17th for Ladies' Night and the Bozeman Icedogs on Saturday, February 18th for Billy's Birthday.
