Bighorns defenseman Tom Emery wasted no time, scoring the first goal of the evening less than two minutes into the game and gave the Bighorns a quick 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, Helena’s Trevor Tracy and Theo Campe each scored a goal of their own to widen the Bighorns lead to 3-0.
Bighorns’ forward Dalton Bowles scored his first goal a quarter of the way into the second period. A few minutes later, Theo Campe scored his second goal of the evening to give the Bighorns a 5-0 lead. The Wild finally got on the board with a goal by Taylor Motsinger with just two-and-a-half minutes left in the period. Going into the second intermission, the Bighorns lead 5-1.
The first goal of the third period didn’t come until more than halfway through when Gillette’s Casey Moneer scored to make it 5-2. A rash of penalties gave both teams power play opportunities but neither was able to capitalize on them. With just two minutes left in the game, Helena’s Danny Fazio scored his first goal as a Bighorn to give the team a 6-2 lead. The last few seconds of the game saw tensions reach a boiling point when several players began fighting. Gillette’s coach’s frustration resulted in him receiving a game misconduct and the game ended with several players in the penalty box.
The Bighorns will return home next weekend to host a two-game homestand against the Gillette Wild on Friday and the Great Falls Americans on Saturday.
