Day 1 of the Helena Bighorns 2011 Training Camp officially comes to a close after a steady dose of drills, practice, team meals, and a scrimmage. Friday officially began with an early morning wake-up call and a bus shuttle from the Super 8 Hotel to the Helena Ice Arena.
A total of forty hopeful players were on hand and divided into teams of "White" and "Gold" and went through separate but similiar on-ice workouts. Players engaged in several passing and skating drills in the early morning to showcase their footwork and conditioning level.
Following some down time at the hotel and an all team pregame meal, Friday evening's scrimmage was the focal point as the coaching staff, scouts, parents, and the Bighorn faithful were eagerly watching the players. On hand were family, scouts, and players from varying areas including southern California, Texas, Washington, Idaho, Michigan, and Canada. With a rolling 25 minute clock, the White team jumped to an early 2-0 lead after the first period, but the Gold team battled back and tallied three goals on the board by the end of two pulling the score to 4-3. As the game progressed and players gelled with one another, a physical third period saw the game come to a 6-6 tie.
Day 1 came to a close as both teams skated to center ice and acknowledged their fans in attendance.
Day 2 begins with another early morning shuttle capped with the annual Blue-White Scrimmage. Puck drop is at 7:30 and the event is open to the public.
